What does confidentiality mean?
Confidentiality means that information about you will be shared between workers in The Barn but won’t be passed on to someone outside The Barn (BADAS). We would not even tell your best mate, parents, school or the Police.
Sometimes it can be useful to talk to other people. The Barn can help you to do this. Information about you will be written in your file and in other service records. You can ask to see your file at any time - please see the Data Protection Section at the bottom on this page.
How does The Barn know what I want?
When you come to The Barn you will be asked to complete a ‘Sharing Information’ form. This form lists all the people involved with you. You tell The Barn what you want us to tell them.
For example:
“You can tell my mum everything apart from me going out with my mate Luke.”
“You can tell my best mate Luke everything.”
“My teacher, Miss Smith is not allowed to know that I come to The Barn”
“John, my social worker, knows I am coming to The Barn anyway so you can tell him that but not what I am doing in The Barn.”
You can change the level of information you allow to be shared whenever you want. You can also change the people on the list at any time.
If you see the drugs workers in the Youth Offending Team (YOT) the information you give will be shared with your YOT worker, but you can ask for a confidential service. If you are coming to The Barn as part of an order with the YOT you will need to agree that The Barn can let your YOT worker know if you have attended your appointments or not. We don’t have to tell your YOT worker anything else about your work with The Barn if you don’t want us to, but it can be in your best interests if you let us.
Does that mean The Barn will never talk to other people?
In most cases the workers in The Barn will try to explain to you when and why they might need to share information about you. You will be involved, as much as possible, throughout this process.
There are some things that we have to tell other people.

I use drugs. Will you have to tell other people about that?
No, The Barn doesn’t have to talk to other people about the fact that you are using alcohol or drugs. Sometimes it might be helpful to you for other people to know and understand about your drug or alcohol use. The Barn can help you with talking to people about your use or other important issues in your life if you want.
What if I am under 13 years old?
If you are under 13 The Barn may need your parent / carer’s permission for you to use some of the services that we offer. We will talk to you first about this before we contact anyone.
National Drug & Alcohol Treatment Monitoring System (NDATMS)
The government collects information about drug services to make sure that they are run properly and to plan for the future. The Barn has to give information about the number of young people coming to The Barn; this includes the initials, date of birth and gender of young people so that people aren’t counted more than once. When you come to The Barn you will be asked if you are happy for us to give this information - you have a right to say no.
