Welcome to the Professionals section of The Barn website.

History of The Barn
The Barn was launched in 1997 by Barnsley Alcohol & Drug Advisory Service (pp87bbad40.gif ) in response to a growing number of young people accessing the adult service.  At the time it was one of the first dedicated young people’s drug services in the country, consisting of only three full-time workers.

Open Mornings
Every few weeks we hold a ‘Professional Open Morning’ to provide you with the opportunity to visit The Barn, have a look around, meet staff and find out more about what we offer.

The sessions, which last about 1 ½ hours usually take place in the morning (as the name suggests), but we do occasionally hold a session in the afternoon to make them available to everyone.  You can book a place on a session simply by phoning or emailing us.

The sessions are not drop-in sessions, so we do ask that you turn up at the session start time, and that you let us know if you are unable to attend.

Consultation Service
The Barn provides a consultation service for professionals working with young people.  This includes providing basic drugs awareness sessions for you and your colleagues to enable you to provide you with basic knowledge and advice around running successful drug education sessions.  We can also provide support when you’re working with an individual young person around drug or alcohol issues.

Joint Working
The Barn team are keen to work jointly with other organisations to improve the provision of drug services to young people in the Barnsley area.  Having a number of joint-working protocols in place we have been able to forge good working relationships with key agencies, including the Youth Offending Team and Connexions.

Services in the Community
It can sometimes be difficult for young people to access the town centre therefore we aim to offer appointments within the community if this is requested.  We have good relationships with local schools and social services departments who support us in offering appointments within the community.  We can also arrange for a worker to hold several consecutive appointments within one venue if the need arises.
