Information & Advice
We provide information and advice about drugs and alcohol.  We also have a range of information leaflets available.

Drug & Alcohol Work
Drug and alcohol work includes doing things like:

·
Looking at the ‘drugs box’ to see what drugs look like
·
Learning safer ways of using drugs or alcohol
·
Helping you to cut down or stop using drugs or alcohol
·
If you’ve already stopped using drugs or alcohol, we can help you to stay stopped

Counselling
You may want regular sessions to talk about problems you are having.  Counselling offers privacy, quality time, support and respect for what you say, feel and want for yourself.

Ear Acupuncture
Ear acupuncture is a treatment which involves inserting up to 5 very fine needles into the skin of the ear in particular points.  This is believed to help the body heal itself.  Once the needles are in place you spend about 40 minutes chilling out.  The treatment works better if you have regular sessions.

The benefits of acupuncture include:
·
Helping you feel more relaxed
·
Can reduce cravings (cravings are the urge to use drugs or alcohol)
·
Can help you to sleep
·
Can help with withdrawal symptoms (withdrawal symptoms are the unpleasant effects some people get when they stop using drugs or alcohol)

For those of you who are scared of needles, we also offer ‘beads’.  These are tiny magnetic metal balls with a sticky backing.  We place one in each ear and it helps to give a similar effect to having full acupuncture.  People who have had acupuncture can also have ‘beads’ to make the effects of the acupuncture last longer.

If you are under 16, we need to write to your parent / guardian before we can give you acupuncture, but you don’t need consent to have ‘beads’.

Services for young people who inject drugs
For young people who inject drugs, such as heroin, amphetamine (speed) or steroids we offer a range of specialist services.  This includes advice and information around injecting injuries, infections, overdoses and vaccinations.  As part of this service we can also provide clean injecting equipment and dispose of used equipment safely.  Any young person who wants to use this service must have an assessment first.  This helps us get a good understanding of their drug use and helps us to offer the best advice and service for them.

Medical Services
Some young people might need medical help to stop using drugs or alcohol. If you feel you need this a Barn worker will chat with you about the types of services available and help you decide which one is right for you.  Your Barn worker will also support you through the process, including referring you to the right service, preparing you to stop and visiting / seeing you regularly throughout the treatment and helping you to find new ways of coping without drugs or alcohol to help you staying stopped.

Advocacy
The Barn can help you to access other services and can also speak to other people on your behalf, such as your teacher or parents.  This will only be done with your permission.

How do I get these services

If you want to get any of these services you need to be referred to The Barn.  You can do this by:

Contacting us
You, or someone you trust, can contact us and we will give you an appointment to come and see a Barn worker.

We usually offer an appointment within 10 working days.

If you don’t want to come into the town centre, we may be able to meet you in school or college, at social services, at your doctors surgery or even at your youth club.

Other Places
We also work with other organisations such as Connexions, the Youth Offending Team and learning mentors, etc.  Some even have a Barn worker working in their building and will be able to see you there.

Just ask your worker to be referred to The Barn.
